Watermark Church to Collect Shoes for Families in Need

SEARCY – On July 14, those attending one Searcy church will participate in something that many may call "out of the ordinary." They will attend barefoot.

Watermark Church in Searcy is hosting "Barefoot Sunday" this weekend and encouraging those attending service on Sunday to come barefoot in an effort to help families in need around the world.

In addition to coming barefoot, churchgoers are encouraged to bring and donate newly purchased shoes which will be transported to the organization Convoy of Hope, who will in turn distribute the shoes to needy families around the world.

"We felt this was a unique opportunity for our area," said youth pastor Craig Woodson. "Last year we were able to collect about 200 pairs of shoes, this year we are hoping to double that."

The idea is to purchase shoes in the same way you normally would for yourself – same size and same style. However, instead of lacing up your new shoes to participate in Sunday services, the shoes remain in the box to be given away to someone like you in another part of the world.

"We want to bring to the surface how many people in the world go without shoes every single day," said David Bunting, music pastor at Watermark. "It's a neat opportunity and something you don't get to do often. It's amazing that such a small thing can help someone else a world away that I may never get the opportunity to see face-to-face."

Service for "Barefoot Sunday" will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 14. Woodson says that although they would love to have everyone participate in this special day, people unable to attend but interested in giving to this cause can do so by visiting the event website www.BarefootSearcy.com.

"We're shooting for 400 pairs of shoes," Woodson said. "But our real purpose is to simply be the church. Blessing people that we don't even know and just loving them like Jesus would love them, that's the real goal."

Watermark Church is located at 2904 Hawkins Drive in Searcy. For more information on the church or this event, please visit WatermarkSearcy.com
