Arkansas Foodbank's Empty Bowls event

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – The 12th annual Empty Bowls event was held Thursday in Little Rock.

It's the Arkansas Foodbank's largest running and most consistently successful fundraiser. Our very own Tom Brannon emceed the event, where Arkansas artists create works of art for the auction.

Along with great art, there was also a food court of sorts featuring some of Little Rock's top-rated restaurants.

The Foodbank is celebrating 30 years of feeding the hungry this year.

‘THV11 in Your Town’ feature: Arkadelphia

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (KTHV) – For my second THV 11 in My Town feature, I headed out to Arkadelphia for a day and found quite a few great things to highlight.

ARKADELPHIA ALLIANCE AND DEMOGRAPHICS

First, I stopped by the Arkadelphia Alliance (Arkadelphia Regional Economic Development Alliance and Area Chamber of Commerce if you’re not into that whole brevity thing). There, executive vice president Shelley Loe talked to me about some of the great features in Arkadelphia and what the city had to offer.

If you’re into numbers, the city is home to around 10,714 citizens with 3,736 households as of the 2010 census. (See demographics info: http://on.kthv.com/1hwqnsh) It also offers two accredited 4-year institutions – Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University, and the area is home to three school districts—Arkadelphia, Gurdon, and Centerpoint.

Blood donation events in White County for Feb.

Blood donation events in White County for Feb.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Feb. 3, 2014) — Like a hospital emergency room, the American Red Cross must be prepared to provide blood for patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. It’s the blood already on the shelves and readily available that can be lifesaving for people like Chris Salinas.

Chris was a horse trainer who was seriously injured in an accident when a horse pinned him to the pavement. He and his family said they credit the multiple blood transfusions he received with helping him recover.

Type O negative blood is especially needed right now. O negative is the universal blood type and can potentially be transfused to patients with any type. To make an appointment to donate blood and help ensure the shelves are stocked for patients in need, please visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.

Day 30: Woman celebrates 30th birthday with 30 random acts of kindness

Day 30: Woman celebrates 30th birthday with 30 random acts of kindness

BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) – Most birthdays are celebrated with a cake, candles, and a few good friends wishing you a happy one, but one Benton woman decided to do things a little differently this year for her 30th.

Nicki Simpkins, of Benton, is doing a random act of kindness each day for the 30 days leading up to her birthday. Simpkins said she decided that Jan. 27 would no longer be about her; instead, she wanted it to be about others.

She said she was driving home from visiting her in-laws in November and was thinking about the big birthday ahead; she had originally anticipated doing a 30 before 30 list to accomplish things like running a 5K or going to a concert, but a recent family death inspired her to leave the world a little bit better for her son in the future.

In fact, she plans to continue doing these random acts of kindness even after her big day is over.
