White Co. participates in 'Operation Drug Take Back'

WHITE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - Several locations in White County are participating in a statewide campaign aimed at disposing of expired or unwanted prescriptions. 

This event is not only for prescription drugs, but also over-the-counter drugs are welcome. Arkansas Prescription Drug Take Back in White County will be held Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m.

SEARCY, Ark. (Main Street Searcy Swing) - Main Street Searcy invites you to attend Swing Into Spring on April 23 to raise money for Main Street Searcy's downtown projects. 

On Thursday, April 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. the Robbins Sanford Grand Hall will be hosting a celebration from downtown Searcy with silent and live auctions, food and live entertainment. 

Tickets are $25 per person. All of the proceeds will go towards non- profit organization Main Street Searcy. The tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling the Main Street office at 279-9007.

Jacksonville police crack down on texting while driving

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - Starting April 13, Jacksonville law enforcement will be raising awareness to the dangers behind texting and driving. 

The Jacksonville Police Department will be taking part in a national campaign called U Drive. U Text. U Pay. This campaign will combine harsher enforcement along with increased advertising and media outreach. 

“Driving and texting is illegal and irresponsible. People who break our State’s texting law will be stopped and fined. If you drive and text, you will pay,” said April Kiser.  “For those who say that driving and texting is an epidemic, we believe enforcement of our state texting law is part of the cure.”

All drivers are banned from sending text messages while driving (Arkansas Criminal Statue 27-51-1504).  The fine for texting and driving in Jacksonville is $175.00.

Jacksonville museum to celebrate Vietnam Veterans Day

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - The Jacksonville Museum of Military History will host a "Welcome Home" event to remember and honor Vietnam veterans Saturday, April 11. 

On May 25, 2012, President Barack Obama declared May 28, 2012 through November 11, 2025 as the 'Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.' 

The museum will be open at no charge to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 11. There will be several exhibits on display at the event. There will also be live music and a showing of the new documentary "The Last days in Vietnam" presented by AETN.

CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) - A junior at Cabot High School is raising awareness for Special Olympics Ark. by holding a "Spread the Word" campaign Friday, March 13.

Trea Kiser, who is an ambassador for the Special Olympics Arkansas, is holding a "Spread the Word to End the Word" to raise awareness of the derogatory use of the r-word (retard/retarded). 

Banners for people to sign will be set up during both lunch times on March 13, times include 10:54 a.m. to 11:26 a.m. and 11:51 a.m. to 12:23 p.m.

Marketing board sets meeting, facility tour at searcy

SEARCY, Ark. (ADEQ) - The Arkansas State Marketing Board for Recyclables will meet March 25, 2015, at the Searcy Chamber of Commerce, 2823 S. Main, Searcy, after touring a local recycling center the day before. The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m.

The board will hear reports on recycling programs operated by the City of Searcy and the White River Regional Solid Waste Management District from Searcy Mayor David Morris and the District’s Sarah Sexton, recycling program coordinator and solid waste educator, respectively.

In addition, Jimmy Swain, site director of manufacturing for the Bryce Corp. in Searcy will present a history of the company’s recycling efforts. The Bryce Corp. produces plastic packaging for the food processing industry, along with plastic sheeting.

Also, the board will tour the Searcy Sanitation and Recycling Facility, 409 W. Beebe-Capps Expressway, Searcy, beginning at 1:30 p.m. March 24, 2015.

Event to honor Iraq/Afghanistan veterans

SEARCY, Ark. (KTHV) - An event created to honor veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan will be held March 14 at the Veterans Outreach Center off 1308 East Race St. in Searcy.

"Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Day of Recognition" is being sponsored by the non-profit organization, Veterans Outreach Center.
