Arkansas inmate dies after prison stabbing
News

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Department of Correction says an inmate treated and released from a hospital following a stabbing has died.

Thirty-two-year-old Joe Harter was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at a Searcy hospital. Department officials say he was stabbed in the chest Monday during an altercation with another inmate at the Grimes Unit in Newport. They say a homemade weapon was confiscated after the attack.

The identity of the other inmate hasn't been released.

Department officials say Harter was initially treated and released from a Newport hospital on Monday. They say the prison's medical staff became concerned about his health on Tuesday and took him to the Searcy hospital. It's unclear what caused him to be readmitted.

Harter was serving a 15-year drug sentence.

State police are investigating.
