Riverview agri students learn in new greenhouse

The Riverview Agriculture Educational Department is enjoying their new 1800 sq ft Greenhouse from the Department of Career Technology Education Grant. This spring semester, students have enjoyed taking classes and working in the Greenhouse.

Guest speaker Sherri Sanders with the White County Cooperative Extension Service of University of Arkansas demonstrated to the students how to properly plant and divide plants; discussed the best types of soil to use for different plants; the variations of temperature and light required for different plants; and the variations of plant textures and colors to consider when combining plants. After the demonstration, students used the information they learned and filled pots and containers with the correct soils and combinations of plants.

The vegetable plants and flowers will be sold as a fund raiser for the Agricultural Science Department for student activities and competitions.

Eight schools from the state competed in the “SkillsUSA” competition. Nikki, Skye, & Brittany are part of the ASU Searcy Vocational program. They created a clock to go with this year’s class theme “Skilled & Motivated.” They were required to take the focus of the theme and create a project that represents knowledge, patriotism, industrial society, technology, and the individual.

The team used the computer to design their clock. They were required to present a speech on how their creation meets all of the strategies of “SkillsUSA.” The students worked three months to complete their clock.

Winning 1st place now makes them eligible to compete nationally at Kansas City on June 20-27.
