BEEBE, Ark. – Arkansas State University-Searcy, a technical campus of ASU-Beebe, has received a $345,000 grant from the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services to be used for the Multi-Skills Technology program at the ASU-Searcy and ASU-Heber Springs campuses, in addition to classes held at Lonoke High School Carver campus.

This program, which is being funded through a grant recently awarded to ADWS by the U.S. Department of Labor, will target dislocated workers and long-term unemployed individuals, including eligible underserved and minority populations.

Grant money is available to assist the unemployed in gaining skills and knowledge needed for careers in the manufacturing, agriculture, business maintenance and service industry. The program is designed to prepare students for the careers requiring general technical skills. Tuition will be paid in full for some unemployed, qualified applicants.

SEARCY, Ark. — Approximately 700 people attended the second presentation of Harding University’s American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series Tuesday, Nov. 3 with author Wes Moore. The message of his presentation, titled “Potential of Education for Transformational Impact,” encouraged students to use their skills, knowledge and passions to make a difference in the world.

“’What is your major?’ is not the most important question you will ever be asked. ‘Who did you fight for?’ is,” Moore said. “Higher education is defined by your ability to take the things that you have learned to make it matter to someone else besides yourself that you were even there.”

A decorated Army combat veteran, youth advocate and CEO of BridgeEdU, Moore shared moving stories about his friends and family making a difference in the world, and he revealed some insight into one of his New York Times best-selling books — “The Other Wes Moore.”

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. - (Oct. 29, 2015 – With recent flash news alerts regarding missing children, teens, and others alike throughout the state, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office decided to issue a reminder to all parents regarding the indentification of their children. 

Major Lafayette Woods, Jr. issued the following statement on Thursday:

When a child or someone you know is reported missing, emotions become raw, which can hinder the ability of parents or love ones to make rational decisions. Yet, their actions and the actions of law enforcement in the first 48 hours are critical to the safe recovery of a missing. Knowing what you can do, what others can do, and where to go for help will not only expedite the search and recovery of your child or love one, it also will help to ease the emotional and financial burden of the search.
